The holiday season is a wonderful time for both personal reflection and community celebration. Many people also see this time of the year as a chance to give back and make a difference, often by raising awareness for important causes. One of those causes is\u00a0Persons with Disabilities Awareness Month<\/strong>\u00a0as well as\u00a0International Day of Persons with Disabilities<\/strong>\u00a0which took place on December 3rd. At\u00a0Medicalincs<\/span><\/strong>, we want to highlight the challenges, triumphs, and daily lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs), and encourage a deeper understanding of what it means to live with a disability.<\/p>

Before we can truly understand the challenges persons with disabilities face, we must first understand a critical aspect often overlooked in disability advocacy: the distinction between\u00a0visible<\/strong>\u00a0and ininvisible disabilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Visible disabilities<\/strong>\u00a0are those that are immediately apparent to others such as individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, or other assistive devices. Conditions like blindness, amputation, or physical impairments that affect mobility and physical appearance fall into this category.<\/p>

On the other hand,\u00a0invisible disabilities<\/strong>\u00a0are not immediately apparent. These conditions may not manifest through physical traits, yet they can significantly impact daily functioning. Examples of invisible disabilities include chronic pain, mental health conditions, epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, hearing impairments, and neurodiversity, such as autism and ADHD.<\/p>

Some individuals may experience both visible and invisible conditions. For example, someone with a visible disability, such as a person in a wheelchair, may also have chronic pain or mental health conditions that are invisible to others. This intersection further emphasizes the importance of adopting an inclusive mindset that acknowledges all types of disabilities, whether or not they are immediately visible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is crucial that we stop making assumptions based solely on what we can see. A person\u2019s outward appearance does not tell the full story of their physical, emotional, or cognitive experiences. In fact, many disabilities\u2014whether visible or invisible\u2014are often accompanied by additional challenges that are not immediately perceptible to the outside world.<\/p>

Here are just some of the challenges people with visible disabilities may face:<\/p>
